Psalm 46 is the Responsorial Psalm for the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
It has particular relavence on that day, but can also be used at any Mass that highlights the Church, our individual connection with Rome, or the community of Catholic believers.
The refrain, "The waters of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High," is in g minor, with a Picardy third at the end.
Accompanied by firm organ harmonies, it is easily sung by the cantor and repeated by the congregation, in usual style.
The verses [2-3, 5-6, 8-9] are set to a Meinrad-style harmonic tone.
This is a simple psalm setting, wherein lies its beauty and versatility.
Sung as the Responsorial on November 9, it can also work as an Entrance Chant or Communion Psalm on other days.
