Saint Paul Nunc Dimittis

- Gary D. Penkala

PDF Sample

Use: Funeral, November
Required Resources: Cantor, congregation, organ
Language: English

The Nunc dimittis is the familiar Gospel canticle from Luke 2:29-32. It is sung daily at Compline (Night Prayer). This Canticle of Simeon recalls his great peaceful resignation to death, now that he has witnessed the Messiah who brings about his salvation.

In Saint Paul Nunc Dimittis, this canticle is set as the verses for a cantor/congregation piece. The refrain comes from I Corinthians 15, "O death, where is your victory? O grave, where is your sting?" The refrain melody is based on the hymn tune Saint Columba.

This can easily be sung at a Funeral Mass, for the Entrance, Offertory or Communion.
