These Communion Antiphons are some of the last music written by Colin Brumby, a wonderfully prolific Australian composer.
In fact, in 2018, he unfortunately died before completing the score.
A few of the antiphons were left unfinished, and Gary Penkala, with the permission and encouragement of Dr. Brumby's widow, stepped in to complete the work.
These additions are clearly marked to distinguish them from the original composer's work.
The collection includes music for each Sunday of Eastertide:
- Easter
- Second Sunday of Easter
- Third Sunday of Easter
- Fourth Sunday of Easter
- Fifth Sunday of Easter
- Sixth Sunday of Easter
- Ascesnion [Vigil]
- Ascension [Day]
- Seventh Sunday of Easter
- Pentecost [Vigil]
- Pentecost [Day]
All the antiphons, with texts from the Roman Missal — Third Edition, are written for unison voices with organ accompaniment.
Although lengthy, they could be sung by a cantor or choir and repeated by the congregation.
The verses use texts from familiar hymns [At the Lamb's High Feast, Loving Shepherd of Your Sheep, Sing We Triumphant Hymns of Praise], set to original SATB music.
These could be supported by soft organ or could be sung by a solo cantor.
With his Communion Antiphons for Eastertide Colin Brumby finishes his liturgical music legacy with a solid, well-crafted and versatile collection that would make an impressive addition to your choir's seasonal repertoire.
