The Roman Missal offer various antiphons for the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday.
Six of these are set by the composer in a versatile SAB format.
The a cappella style is most suitable for the Triduum, where no organ music is generally heard from Gloria to Gloria.
These antiphons are included:
- After the Lord had risen from supper …
- Lord, are you to wash my feet? …
- If I have washed your feet …
- This is how all will know …
- I give you a new commandment …
- Faith, hope and charity …
Antiphon #2 is unique in its inclusion of optional trio or solo sections, highlighting the words of Saint Peter and Our Lord.
The first five antiphons are in the keys of C Major or a minor, and could easily be sung together.
The last antiphon, in a lilting 6/8 time, is in the key of E-flat Major.
This could be sung separately, perhaps with psalm verses, or as a stand-alone piece.
