Here's a convenient way to use the approved texts for the Palm Sunday procession that opens Mass.
The congregation sings a refrain on a text they already know:
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
The cantor(s) and/or unison choirs(s) sing the verses that appear in the Roman Missal:
- Holy, holy, holy Lord...
- Heaven and earth are full of your glory...
- Blessed is he who comes...
- The children of Jerusalem...
- They carried olive branches...
- They spread their cloaks...
- They proclaimed the resurrection of life...
- Waving olive branches...
- Lift up, O gates...
- Who is this king of glory?...
- Lift up, O gates...
- Who is this king of glory?...
The modal music is easy to sing and accompanied by organ throughout.
For ease of use, the congregational refrain is interpolated in the score where it occurs, avoiding a page turn back to the refrain after the verses.
This is a great addition to your Palm Sunday repertoire — a processional that can be sung at any Mass, with minimum of a cantor and organ.
