Of the six holydays of obligation in the U.S., three have Marian-themes: Immaculate Conception, Mary Mother of God, and Assumption.
The first of these to occur in the secular calendar year is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God on January 1.
Of the Mass Propers for this day, perhaps the least heard is the Offertory Antihpon, Blessed are you, O holy Virgin Mary …, which is here set as an SATB motet.
In a mostly homophonic setting with short touches of polyphony, the composer writes logical, refreshing harmonies.
Good voice leading and solid part writing make this an outstanding example of the choral composer's craft.
The Offertory antiphon text divides into two parts, "Blessed are you … " and "for from you has come forth … "
Koraus converts this to quasi ABA form by repeating part of the first section at the end.
If you're looking for a contemporary Christmas motet that stays true to standard harmonic practice, explore this one.
You and your choir and your congregation will love it!
