The traditional Latin text for this motet is the Alleluia proper for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
The structure is in four parts:
- Tota pulchra es, Maria.
You are totally pure, Mary.
- Macula originalis non est in te.
The stain of original sin is not within you.
- Tu gloria Jerusalem, tu lætitia Israel, tu advocata peccatorum, O Maria.
You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel; you are the advocate for sinners, O Mary.
- Tota pulchra es, Maria.
You are totally pure, Mary.
A consistent rhythm and some harmonic repetition unifies sections 1, 2 and 4, making the piece easy to learn.
Section 3 is set to a flowing unison chant melody.
This solid, reverent motet has excellent part writing, and will earn a treasured spot in your SATB choir's repertoire for years to come!
