Non in solo pane

- B. Andrew Mills

PDF Sample

Use: Lent, General
Required Resources: SATB choir
Language: Latin

Matthew 4:4 offers a mantra for the whole season of Lent: "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God."

Writing from New Orleans, Andrew Mills has set this text as a fine SATB motet, in neo-Renaissance style. He writes in a solid polyphonic style, with typical points of imitation.

Vocal ranges are comfortable, each extending less than an octave. A baritone or two could easily sing the tenor part in smaller choirs.

The text, Non in solo pane vivit homo, sed in omni verbo quod procedit de ore Dei, is the Gospel Verse and Communion Antiphon for the First Sunday of Lent. A wonderful opportunity for the choir to actually sing the liturgy.
