Use: Pentecost, Confirmation
Required Resources: organ, 2 trumpets
Written as a gift for a high school trumpeter on his Confirmation [who actually played the permiere performance that day], this fantasy incoporates three melodies related to the Holy Spirit:
- Down Ampney was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the 1906 The English Hymnal, using the text "Come down, O love divine."
It was in fact sung at the composer's funeral in Westminster Abbey in 1958.
The tune appears in each trumpet part at the beginning, is scored for trumpet duet without organ in the middle, and plays against the chant melody near the end.
- My Spirit Be Joyful is a melody from the J.S. Bach Easter Cantata #146.
This appears in the organ as a transition to the trumpet duet noted above.
- Veni Creator Spiritus is a strong, familiar chant for the Holy Spirit.
The composer has set this as a canon at the quarter note for the trumpets without organ, and as a counter melody to the Down Ampney hymn tune near the end.
Neither the trumpet parts nor the organ part are difficult.
This would make a wonderful prelude to a Pentecost or Confirmation Mass, giving two high school trumpeters an opportunity to contribute to the festivities of the day.
