Calvert Shenk, Organist and Director of Music at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, has an affinity for setting Latin texts in a most effective way.
This prayer from the Tridentine Mass was recited by the priest during the Offertory, after the water was placed in the chalice.
The text translates:
With a spirit of humility and with a contrite heart, let us be received by Thee, O Lord; and let our sacrifice in Thy sight this day be such as pleaseth Thee, O Lord God.
This a cappella motet is in strict ABA form.
The A section begins homophonically and at the words, "suscipiamur a te" a polyphonic treatment ensues.
The B section uses Gregorian psalm tone V, first with unison men, then in a harmonic, faux bourdon phrase with the psalm tone in the tenor voice.
The consonant but slightly chromatic harmonies, as well as the very comfortable ranges (e.g. tenor E-flat to E-flat) make this motet a potential favorite for both the choir and the congregation.
