The Nine Tenebræ Responsories, published in three volumes, come from the traditional Tenebræ service.
This was celebrated on the evening before Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
It consisted of combined Matins and Lauds for the following day, sung in choir, plus some additional ceremonial which included the extinguishing of candles placed in a 15-candle holder.
The responsories which Dr. Brumby has set are from the three Nocturns of Matins for Good Friday.
Each Nocturn was arranged with three Psalms with Antiphons, then three Lessons, each followed by its own Responsory.
The texts in Volume 1 (taken from the First Nocturn) are titled: All My Friends Have Deserted Me (Omnes amici mei), The Veil of the Temple (Velum templi), and My Chosen Vine (Vinea mea electa).
Each of the Nine Tenebræ Responsories is set as a two-part canons for equal or mixed voices with organ accompaniment.
They would be appropriate musical additions to a Tenebræ Service during Holy Week, or perhaps as part of a mid-week service during Lent.
