lex E. Hill is the Director of Music and Liturgy at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Cary NC.
A native of Hamilton, Ohio, he spent his high school and undergraduate college years in Texas before relocating to Pennsylvania in 1988.
He is married and the father of six children.
Alex began formal music study by attending the University of North Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree (with honors) in Composition in 1988.
He continued his training at The Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Masters of Music degree in Conducting, with emphasis in both choral and orchestral disciplines.
Alex was the recipient of the 1991 Graduate Assistant Award for Outstanding Teaching at Penn State, and has spent several years as an instructor in the School of Music, teaching courses in music theory, counterpoint, composition/orchestration, and conducting.
From 1991 to 2009, Alex served as Music Director of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Orchestra, a regional symphonic ensemble which he founded, made up of talented high school and middle school musicians from around the area.
He has also led performances by the Penn State Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras, the Nittany Valley Symphony, the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, the Music at Penn's Woods Festival Orchestra, and the Tri-County Festival Orchestra.
As a choral conductor, Alex has directed the PSU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, the Women's Chorus, and served as guest conductor of the professional Pennsylvania Chamber Chorale.
At the Easter Vigil in 1993, while serving as interim Music Director at Our Lady of Victory Church in State College, PA, Alex received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist as a neophyte Catholic, beginning a committed involvement in the spiritual and liturgical life of the Church.
Inspired by two years serving as regular Music Director at Our Lady of Victory (1996-98), Alex began creating music to serve special liturgical functions, as seen in his music for the dismissal rite, for the sprinkling rite, and for the Easter sequence published by CNP.
He continues to add new liturgical pieces to his collection of practical works.
Alex co-founded the Ballet Theatre of Central Pennsylvania with his wife, Andrea, and served as Managing Director and Music Director of this regional youth ballet company.
In 2004, Alex and Andrea founded the Arts Conservatory of Central Pennsylvania, a school for the performing arts with programs in music, dance, and theater.
