native of Kansas City, Missouri, Robert Benson began organ studies in high school with William Lemmens and continued at the University of Kansas with Richard Gayhart.
Since the age of sixteen he has served as organist and/or choirmaster at a number of churches in Missouri, Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio, including Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Ann Arbor during his graduate education at the University of Michigan, and later Saint David Episcopal Church in Southfield, Michigan.
After moving to Oxford, Ohio, he organized the Trinity Choir of Men and Children (RSCM) at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Oxford.
Benson pursues composition for choir, organ and other instruments and is published by Augsburg Fortress, Trinitas (OCP), Saint James Music Press, Church Publishing, Inc., and Mark Foster Music.
His works have been performed at parish and cathedral churches in the United Kingdom and Canada as well as throughout the United States; and they have been reviewed in various journals, including The American Organist, The Diapason, the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians, and The Hymn.
For over 28 years, Dr. Benson has been on the faculty of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where his music has been performed by the University Men's Glee Club and the University Collegiate Chorale as well as set choreographically by the University Dance Theatre.
He is an active member of the Association of Anglican Musicians and past Dean of the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
