Fr. Gabriel
Iróffy

F r. Gabriel Iróffy OSB was born in Budapest, Hungary on March 26, 1927. He attended elementary school and junior high in the Györ Diocesan School, and high school in the Györ Benedictine Gymnasium. He became a monk at Saint Martin Monastery, Pannonhalma, Hungary. In 1946 he graduated in Theology from San Anselmo University in Rome, Italy.

In 1952 he traveled to Brazil, joining Saint Gerald's Abbey, which supports Saint Emeric School, founded by Hungarian Benedictine monks in São Paulo in 1951. He began work as an English and Theology instructor, and in 1960 graduated in Anglo-Germanic Languages from the University of São Paulo.

From 1966 to 1974 he was the Junior High Academic Counselor at Saint Emeric School and in 1975 became Headmaster, a position that he occupied until 2004. Because of his keen interest in music, Fr. Iróffy founded the Music School Esterháza and is currently its Headmaster.

Apart from music, Father's interests also include linguistics and children's folklore.
