ichael Lawrence received a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet from Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Conservatory, with additional studies in organ and conducting.
While in college he served as a part time sacristan at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Baltimore, where he first became a student of the liturgy and learned to appreciate the Latin Mass, in that case the Ordinary Form (Novus Ordo) liturgy.
He currently is a parishioner at Mater Ecclesiae Roman Catholic Church in Berlin NJ, which uses only the Extraordinary Form liturgy (1962 Missal) and the old rite for other Sacraments.
He is currently active as a musician in Philadelphia PA, where he plays one service a week at a Lutheran church, and frequently substitutes as organist at the Cathedral-Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
Mr. Lawrence had previously worked as music director in several parishes, and reinstituted the regular use of Gregorian chant in all of them.
As a composer he has received several commissions, including one from the Saint Cecilia Schola in Auburn AL.
He is also a contributor to Sacred Music magazine, with an article on the use of the organ in the Roman Rite in the Fall 2006 issue.
CanticaNOVA Publications is pleased to offer the music of Michael Lawrence in our catalog:
