ev. Dr. John T. Martin was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in Fort Lupton, Colorado.
He is the oldest of four childrem.
After high school in Fort Lupton, he earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree (1965) from Westminster Choir College, and a Masters of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1967).
His ministerial degrees include a Masters of Divinity [magna cum laude] from Duke Divinity School (1973) and Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC (1976).
From 1970 through 2011 he served as minister in various United Methodist churches in Virginia, continuing post-retirement as interim minister in the same areas.
His musical positions included junior high vocal music instructor in New Jersey and Colorado, and director of music in Pensacola, Florida.
He served as director of several choral societies: Halifax (VA) Community Chorale, Springfield (VA) Community Chorale, Alleghany Highlands (Covington VA) Chorale, and Manassa (VA) Community Chorale.
With his wife, Marianne, a long-time piano teacher and soprano soloist, he led many United Methodist mission teams in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Africa, eastern Europe and Asia.
Dr. Martin is an accomplished pianist, conductor, composer and avid reader.
He is committed to his three children, their spouses and seven grandchildren, and of course to a wonderful, shared ministry in many aspects with Marianne.
(Secretly, he suspects that she married him, at least in part, to have her own, permanent accompanist).
