This Christmas Tuba Tune is really a fantasia on one of the most familiar carols, Joy to the World.
The tune, of itself, is derived from several Handelian motives from Messiah, treated creatively by Italian composer Grimoaldo Macchia.
The piece begins and ends with a straight exposition of the theme in D Major, first on the solo Tuba in the tenor left hand, and ending in the pedal, very slightly ornamented.
Between these, the fantasy emerges using various direct sections of the melody, proceeding through the keys of G Major, B-flat Major and A Major.
In these, the Tuba makes an appearance in the alto, occasionally in octaves, around which the right hand and pedal play a rather intricate accompaniment.
The Tuba stop might certainly be heard again at the end, as a solo stop in the pedal melody, under large manual chords.
A few measures of fun double-pedal are heard, and even conclude the work on a widely-spaced D Major chord (i.e. triple pedal!).
A stunning recessional or postlude for any Christmas Mass — order early to master all those muscular organ techniques by December 25.
