Liturgical Hints & Ideas

During Ordinary Time in Year B we will highlight passages from the 2010 General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) that pertain to music during the liturgy. The GIRM contains rubrics and instructions (some of them surprising) for the celebration of the Mass. The first section below is a direct quote from the document. The second section is a commentary on the passage.

Particular Ministries (GIRM #103)

Among the faithful, the schola cantorum or choir exercises its own liturgical function, its place being to take care that the parts proper to it, in keeping with the different genres of chant, are properly carried out and to foster the active participation of the fiathful by means of singing. What is said about the schola cantorum [choir] also applies with due regard for the relevant norms, to other musicians, and especially the organist.

Commentary: The choir has a definite purpose at liturgy. Try not to approach the choir's role from a non-liturgical Protestant model wherein the choir offers "an anthem" at a particular point in the service. Rather, the documents primarily envision the choir evolving out of a Roman model, wherein a schola (a group of singers, often in unison) offered various chants of the Mass proper (Introit, Gradual, Offertory, Communion, etc.). Ideally, in addition to singing an anthem alone, the choir should alternate with the congregation in the Proper of the Mass and may even (particularly in the instances above) legitimately sing them in place of the congregation.

There are liturgists and musicians, taking as their reference the first half of #103, who posit that there are two categories of music for Mass, that correctly sung by the schola (choir) and that sung by the congregation. The first category (choir music) includes:

  1. Entrance Chant (Introit)
  2. Graduale (Psalm between the Readings
  3. Alleluia [or Tract]
  4. Offertory
  5. Communion

The second category (music for the congregation) includes:

  1. Kyrie
  2. Gloria
  3. Credo
  4. Sanctus
  5. Mystery of Faith
  6. Amen
  7. Agnus Dei

Any of these could be sung in English or in Latin.

While this seems, from our current "American" perspective to be rather radical, it has solid liturgical precedent. Look, for example, at what's contained in the official "choir book" of the Church, the Graduale Romanum: Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communion.
