Liturgical Hints & Ideas

During summer Ordinary Time, when many weddings occur, we will review the musical elements of the marriage ceremony. Engaged couples and the congregation also will benefit from a deeper understanding of these principles. Parishes have permission to duplicate for their use the material in these "Liturgical Hints & Ideas" sections.

The Marriage Ceremony: Processional Music

The organist and/or other instrumentalists should select as the processional a joyful piece that will express the spirit of the occasion. The music need not be a march and the bride need not attempt to walk in time with the music. Depending on the nature of the celebration and the preferences of the couple, a quiet processional may be effective. A vocal selection during the procession may be rather ineffective, as attention will likely be focused on the procession rather than any text being sung.

Suggestions:

Strong Processionals
  • A Wedding Processional (Gerald Near) [Gray]
  • Allegro from Symphoni IV (C.M. Widor)
  • Con moto maestoso from Sontata III (Felix Mendelssohn)
  • Entrée from Maestoso (Calvert Shenk)
