Description
Pastoral Processional is an effective opening for any celebration of priestly
service (ordinations, anniversaries). It has traditional elements (Latin
verses, eloquent English verses, themes from Gregorian chant) but is crafted
in a responsorial idiom so as to be useful in modern liturgies. After a
toccata-like organ introduction, the cantor sings a proclamation with text
from Jeremiah, "Pastores dabo vobis juxta cor meum..." and melody from the
chant Te Deum laudamus. This is followed by the processional proper,
which alternates English and Latin verses sung by cantors and choir sections
with the congregational refrain, "I will give you shepherds after my own
heart, and they shall feed you on knowledge and sound teaching." Written
for a 50th anniversary of priestly ordination, Pastoral Processional may
easily be adapted for general use by choosing to sing the more general verses.
