Liturgical Hints & Ideas
This great solemnity recalls the Princes of the Apostles, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, both martyred in Rome about 30 years after Christ's death and resurrection. Peter died on a cross, upside down (at his request, for he did not feel worthy to die exactly like the Master). The spot is thought to have been the Circus (sports field) of Nero near the ancient Vatican hill outside early Rome. His body was reverently brought by the early Christians to the Vatican hill. Its resting place has been verified by archeological digs as precisely under the main altar of the first and also the present Saint Peter's Basilica.
Saint Paul, a Roman citizen, was not subjected to the cruelty of crucifixion. His martyrdom came by the sword. After he was beheaded, his body was carried south of the city, and he was buried on the site of the present Basilica of Saint Paul's-outside-the-Walls.
This solemnity's ties to Rome are obvious. The two great basilicas are commemorated musically in CNP's processionals: The Loyal Sheep, inspired by Saint Peter's at the Vatican; and May Christ Be Our Life, inspired by Saint Paul's-outside-the-Walls.
