Liturgical Hints & Ideas
During summer Ordinary Time, when many weddings occur, we will review the musical elements of the marriage ceremony. Engaged couples and the congregation also will benefit from a deeper understanding of these principles. Parishes have permission to duplicate for their use the material in these "Liturgical Hints & Ideas" sections.
The Marriage Ceremony: The "Candle Ceremony"
The popular "Candle-lighting Ceremony" is not an official part of the Marriage Rite. It is better left out, but many couples wish to include it as a visible symbol of their union. If music is used here, it must of necessity be brief. A very short solo piece (perhaps a verse or two of a hymn — not congregational!) or a short organ improvisation might support the action.
Suggestions:
- Complete Thy Work, O Lord (Calvert Shenk)
- Prayer of Saint Francis (Gary Penkala)
- The Call (Ralph Vaughan Williams)
To be continued next Sunday …
