Use: Marian, Advent
Required Resources: violin, organ
The Italian title Il messaggio di San Gabriele Arcangelo translates as "The Message of Saint Gabriel the Archangel."
The piece was written for a young violinist who took the name Gabriel for Confirmation.
Scored for violin and organ, the three-minute work alternates between counterpoint and homophonic passages.
Thematic material is derived from the Gregorian chant Ave Maria.
Difficulty level is easy to moderate, and aside from two measures of simple double stops at the end, the solo could also be played on flute or oboe.
Range is from D above middle C to E above the staff.
This would make a wonderful prelude or Communion meditation for the Solemnity of the Annunciation, for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, or for any Marian celebration.
