William Byrd was an important Catholic Renaissance composer in the turbulent era of Elizabeth I in England.
He wrote much sacred music for Anglican and Roman Catholic choirs, and was a noted keyboard composer.
A student and colleague of Thomas Tallis, Byrd wrote dance pieces, including a Pavane in a minor for harpsichord, organ or virginal.
"O Jesus, Blessed Lord, to Thee,", a popular text by Thomas Hansen Kingo (1634-1703), is here set to the mildly polyphonic music of this Pavane.
The Eucharistic text runs:
O Jesus, blessed Lord, to Thee, my heart-felt thanks forever be.
Who hast so lovingly bestowed on me Thy Body and Thy Blood.
What wealth is come to us today, What wealth is come to me today;
My Savior dwells within me now, How blest am I, how good art Thou.
