Description
Requiem aeternam is an example of a perfectly simple yet highly effective
liturgical setting. A refrain on the text "Requiem aeternam dona eis
Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis" is taken from the Introit for the
Requiem Mass ("Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord: and may perpetual light
shine upon them."). This refrain, set by Padre Giovanni Battista Martini
(1706-1784) for a cappella 3-part equal voices, alternates with verses of
Psalm 130 in Latin and English, using Gregorian tone 2. Requiem aeternam
is useful at various places in the funeral Mass and may be sung by a small
choir with great success.
