Liturgical Hints & Ideas
Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.
-- General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) --
The Roman Missal, containing the Mass Ordinary, the antiphons and the prayers for use at Mass; and the Lectionary, containing the readings for Mass, are the two most important books used in the sanctuary. The "Foreword" to this book is called the General Instruction on the Roman Missal, often abbreviated GIRM . A new GIRM was released by the Vatican in 2000, and certain rubrical changes even pre-dated the 2010 promulgation of the English translation.
The GIRM is divided into chapters as follows:

The GIRM is found at the beginning of every Roman Missal. It may also be accessed online at GIRM 2002. You may also find an Appendix to the General Instruction for the Dioceses of the United States of America that lists certain modifcations requested by the U.S. bishops which have been approved by the Holy See.
These documents offer the clearest enunciation of rules and rubrics for celebrating the Eucharistic Liturgy. They're very accessible — for everyone to see!
