Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- CNP Liturgical Planning Pages --

Throwing humility to the wind, I am now prepared to say that there is no better resource on the web, or in print either, to assist Catholic musicians and liturgists in planning music in the parish than CNP's Liturgical Planning Pages. You apparently share some of my enthusiasm … you're here, aren't you? These pages are the only resource I have ever seen to include the texts from the Roman Missal (with the Orations pointed for the Solemn Tone) and the elusive Offertory Antiphon. Most planning aids offer only the Scriptural readings.

Here's what you'll find for every Sunday and holyday of the three-year cycle on our Liturgical Planning Pages:

Liturgical Information

  • Liturgical Color
  • Themes
  • Entrance Antiphon [Introit]
  • Collect (pointed for singing with Solemn Tone)
  • Lectionary Readings
  • Offertory Antiphon
  • Prayer over the Offerings (pointed for singing with Solemn Tone)
  • Preface
  • Communion Antiphon
  • Prayer after Communion (pointed for singing with Solemn Tone)
  • [Prayer over the People -or- Solemn Blessing]

In addition, every text is given for special rites that occur at Mass; like the Blessing of Candles on February 2, the Blessing and Distribution of Ashes on Ash Wednesday, the Solemn Procession on Palm Sunday, the Transfer of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday, the Liturgy of Good Friday, the full Easter Vigil texts.

Musical Suggestions

  • Liturgical Music
    • Entrance Antiphon [Introit]
    • Gradual [Responsorial Psalm]
    • Alleluia [Gospel Acclamation]
    • Offertory
    • Communion
    • Mass settings
    • Other liturgical music
  • Hymns [from fourteen different hymnals]
  • Choral Music
  • Organ Music
  • Liturgical Hints & Ideas

In this last section you'll find a variety of ideas and comments: where to find the Proclamation of the Date of Easter for use on Epiphany, how to arrange a penitential procession for the First Sunday of Lent, why the organ should not be used on Good Friday, how to structure the Pentecost Vigil Mass similar to the Easter Vigil, the differences among the four Masses of Christmas, the idea of a Family Choir on Holy Family Sunday … and many more ideas … like the ones you're reading now.

Make the CNP Liturgical Planning Pages your first source of correct, orthodox information for planning music in your parish. A bookmark or favorite here, possibly with an email note to a friend about your new "find," would be most appreciated!
