Liturgical Hints & Ideas

During summer Ordinary Time, when many weddings occur, we will review the musical elements of the marriage ceremony. Engaged couples and the congregation also will benefit from a deeper understanding of these principles. Parishes have permission to duplicate for their use the material in these "Liturgical Hints & Ideas" sections.

The Marriage Ceremony: Eucharistic Acclamations

The three Eucharistic Acclamations (Sanctus, Mystery of Faith, Amen) should be sung by the congregation. Musical settings can alternate between cantor/choir and congregation to facilitate the participation of the assembled guests, many of whom may not be familiar with a through-composed setting. A warning expressed earlier may well be repeated here: Although it is desirable that the Eucharistic Acclamations be highlighted with congregational singing, if a weak response, or no response at all, is to be anticipated from the particular guests assembled, it is much better to have these spoken, avoiding uncomfortably embarrassing moments.

Suggestions:

  • A Community Mass (Richard Proulx)
  • Danish Amen Mass (David Kraehenbuhl)
  • Festival Eucharist (Richard Proulx)
  • Heritage Mass (Owen Alstott)
  • Mass of Saint Agnes (B. Andrew Mills)
  • Missa sanctorum angelorum (Calvert Shenk)
  • People's Mass (Jan Vermulst)

To be continued next Sunday …
