Liturgical Hints & Ideas
There are two distinct moods in today's liturgy. Mass begins with the triumphal Entrance into Jerusalem. By all means, precede this ritual action with a solemn, glorious organ prelude. Let the congregation hear the crowds shouting and waving palm branches. Continue this mood through the procession. Notice how things change with the Collect and the Liturgy of the Word. Now the emphasis is on the imminent passion and death of Christ. Music for the rest of Mass should reflect this theme. Notwithstanding our hopeful encouragement, most of the congregation will probably not see the church again until Easter Sunday. The second half of today's liturgy needs to be their "Good Friday." The liturgy might taper off to the events of Holy Week by omitting the final hymn, the ministers departing in silence.
