The Latin Credo in unum Deum text is a bedrock of Catholic liturgical theology, dating back to the early councils of Nicaea (AD 325) and Constantinople (AD 381).
Musically it occurs in six chant settings in the official books, and is used in all complete Mass settings by composers through the ages (though not in the Missa brevis).
Because of its length, it is not often set as a stand-alone choral piece.
However, this ingenious setting by Gary Penkala is one such example.
It uses familiar hymn tunes in various textures to set the text.
The following tunes are found for soloists, 2-part choir, SATB choir, chorale-style and as a strict canon:
- Aurelia
- Hyfrydol
- Picardy
- W Zlobie Lezy
- Wondrous Love
- Easter Hymn
- Ich glaub an Gott
- Veni Creator
- Sine nomine
- Hymn to Joy
As might be expected, the Polish Christmas carol sets the text, Et incarnatus est, Wondrous Love is used for Crucifixus, Easter Hymn for Et resurrexit, and Veni Creator for Et is Spiritum Sanctum.
The piece has great variety in the treatment of the hymn tunes, is fun and engaging for the choir, and would make a pleasing Choir Prelude, particularly for Trinity Sunday.
If there is a choir concert in your annual schedule, Credo would be an effective way to highlight those eminently familiar hymn tunes coupled with traditional Latin text.
Go for it!
