Reminiscent of the choral works of the Romantic period, particularly of Felix Mendelssohn, O Send Forth Thy Light is a very accessible setting for a cappella choir.
This piece has quickly become a favorite of the choir at Saint James Church, where composer Elizabeth Lademan is Artist-in-Residence.
It's been sung for Rites of Election and Confirmations with the neighboring choir from Saint Leo Church, and easily fits the bill for a tuneful motet that both holds the interest of the singers and delights the listeners.
The text is the composer's own paraphrase of Psalm 42:3,4a,5b:
O send forth Thy light and send out Thy truth:
for they have conducted and they have brought me,
they brought me unto Thy holiest hill,
conducting me into Thy dwelling place.
And I will go unto the altar,
and I will go unto the altar of God,
to God Who giveth me joy,
Who giveth me joy unto my youth.
O send forth Thy light and send out Thy truth:
for they have conducted and they have brought me,
they brought me unto Thy holiest hill,
conducting me into Thy dwelling place.
O hope thou in God, for I will yet praise Him:
Who is the salvation of my countenance:
Who is the salvation of my countenance:
Who is my salvation and my God.
Give glory to the Father and unto the Son,
and with Them the Spirit, Three-in-One;
as was at first and is now and shall be,
and shall be forever and ever.
Amen.
As with all our a cappella music, this motet has a keyboard reduction of the vocal lines.
A light organ accompaniment can be provided, if necessary, until the choir is comfortable with their parts.
