Colin Brumby is a master of writing good music for parish choirs, within the capabilities of most groups.
Here he has taken three well-known Eucharistic texts from the 13th and 14th centuries and set them to solid, homophonic music.
- Panis angelicus – A chorale-like setting in D Major of the two familiar verses: 1. "Panis angelicus" and 2. "Te trina Deitas"; text by Saint Thomas Aquinas
- Ecce panis angelorum – A brief e minor hymn of two verses: 1. "Ecce panis angelorum" and 2. "In figuris præsignatur"; text by Saint Thomas Aquinas
- Anima Christi – This very popular text, possibly by Pope John XXII, is almost like a litany in its structure. The music proceeds with great harmonic interest, ending with a thrice-sung "in sæcula sæculorum" and an Amen.
The music is intended to be sung a cappella, but can easily be doubled on organ for support.
These are great pieces for Communion time, for Benediction, and certainly for any Eucharistic feast like Holy Thursday or Corpus Christi.
