Antoine Louis Joseph Gueyrand Fernand Fouant de La Tombelle (1854-1928) was a French organist and composer. He enjoyed a musical legacy that included Franz Liszt (his mother's teacher), Alexandre Guilmant (his organ teacher), Théodore Dubois (his composition professor) and Vincent d'Indy (a schola colleague). The majority of his works were sacred, including cantatas on Saint Anne, Saint Cecilia, and Saint Joan of Arc. He also wrote numerous organ pieces, many of them distinctly liturgical and based on Gregorian chant themes.

His Versets are based on the Kyrie orbis factor from Missa XI for Sundays of the Year (Ordinary Time). There are four brief, contrapuntal versets, which alternate with the phrases of the chant, sung by a schola, accompanied or a cappella:

  • chant: Kyrie eleison.
  • organ: (7 measures)
  • chant: Kyrie eleison

  • organ: (6 measures)
  • chant: Christe eleison
  • organ: (8 measures)

  • chant: Kyrie eleison
  • organ: (7 measures)
  • chant: Kyrie eleison

The organ texture is mostly three-part with a bass line (perhaps pedal) coming only at the very end of each section.

A unique feature of this edition is a choral overlay on the organ sections, sung in elongated notes on the same pitch, using the appropriate text for the section, completing the traditional nine-part Kyrie format.
