Use: General, Pentecost, Confirmation, Ordination
Required Resources: Organ
Veni Creator Spiritus is a well-known chant to the Holy Spirit, often sung at Confirmations, Ordinations, and most famously, as the cardinals process into the Sistine Chapel to elect a new pope.
Robert Farrell treats the chant melody rather freely in this quasi-fantasia.
It appears on a manual solo stop with simple chordal accompaniment, but is also found in the pedal, with a contrapuntal descant in diminution.
We also hear it on a trumpet stop with syncopated accompaniment, building to a crescendo.
The chant is whispered in conclusion, on the quietest manual stops.
While one section demands a moderate level of independence (pedal melody, with descant and accompanimental chords), the piece in general is not overly difficult.
What a wonderful prelude for Pentecost, Confirmation … or even an anniversary Mass for the pastor's ordination!
