Old Hundredth is one of the most commonly sung hymn tunes, its Long Meter format used with numerous texts.
The tune, by Louis Bourgeois, dates from the second edition of the Genevan Psalter (16th century).
Thomas McKee gives us an original harmonization to begin his set of variations.
This is followed by six short movements:
- Chorale Prelude – melody ornamented in right hand, accompaniment in left hand and pedal
- Duo – melody in left hand, with countermelody in right hand
- Andante – full four-part texture, with melody allusions throughout
- Meditation – rich, full-textured harmonies with legato melody in soprano
- Fughetta – brief, three-voice counterpoint
- Toccata – full organ, with right hand sixteenth note runs over left hand melody
Only moderate in difficulty, this set of variations would be ideal for an extended prelude, a recital piece, or broken into movements throughout a Mass.
