Highlights
- ATTBB motet
- Ancient Latin Marian text
- Alternates chant and beautiful homophonic passages
Description
The rich harmonies of this a cappella motet are reminiscent of Durufle and
the French Romantics. It is scored for ATTBB (the top part could also be
sung by countertenor). The text is taken directly from the five antiphons
for the psalms of Second Vespers for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception,
and is set as chant melodies surrounded by a 5-part homophonic ritornello,
"Tota pulchra es, Maria, et macula originalis non est in te" (Thou art all
fair, Mary, and the stain of original sin is not in thee). Choirs not able
to divide into four male voice parts may invoke the Renaissance technique of
substituting instruments (ideally strings in this case) for some of the
voice parts. Dr. Greene's Tota pulchra es would lend a splendidly sonorous
touch to your next Marian liturgy.
