Miserere mei, Domine is a concise motet by Calvert Shenk, a skillful choral composer whose a cappella works are some of the finest in our catalog.
This piece, with text from Psalm 41, encapsulates the mood and sentiments of Lenten penitence, and is useful throughout the season.
Miserere mei, Domine, qui peccavi tibi.
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I have sinned against Thee. [Psalm 41:5]
Lying well within the abilities of most church choirs, this motet has use during the Offertory, as part of the Communion music, or as a choral Introit before the Entrance Chant or Hymn.
It is three pages in length, but can be expanded, if desired, by using it as an "extended antiphon" between readings from Lamentations or the Psalms or the Reproaches.
