Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- Roman Missal --

The Roman Missal, revised as a Third Edition [in Latin in 2002 and English in 2010], contains all the texts necessary to celebrate the Eucharstic Liturgy throughout the year, apart from the readings (lections) of the Liturgy of the Word, which are found in the Lectionary. The Roman Missal contains the prescribed text and the options for the non-changing parts of the Mass (e.g. the Penitential Act, Gloria, Creed, Eucharistic Prayers, Blessings). Also included are the Prefaces and other rites (Sprinkling) that may change seasonally or by celebration.

Making up the largest part of the Roman Missal are the proper antiphons (Introit, Communion) and the presidential prayers, or orations, (Collect, Prayer over the Offerings, Prayer after Communion) for every Sunday, seasonal weekday, and saint's day throughout the year. These antiphons and prayers are valuable tools for liturgical planners, and are often overlooked. They are available, as are the elusive Offertory Antiphons, in the CNP Liturgical Planning Pages.

Special Note: All the Orations on the Liturgical Planning Pages are pointed for singing with the Solemn Tone found in Appendix I of the Roman Missal. This is a very valuable tool for priests who want to sing the Orations, but need help in dividing the text properly. Also see the article: O-rational Thinking.
