Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- Lectionary --

Up until a few years ago, all the readings for every Eucharistic Liturgy were contained in a one-volume Lectionary. With the release on February 13, 2002, of the final parts of the revised Lectionary, we now have a four-volume set, organized as follows:

  1. Lectionary for Sunday Mass (Years A, B, C), including Holydays and Solemnities of the Lord
  2. Lectionary for Weekday Masses (Year I)
  3. Lectionary for Weekday Masses (Year II)
  4. Lectionary for the Sanctoral Cycle and Ritual and Votive Masses

For most parish music planning, having Volume 1 (Sundays and Holydays) should be sufficient. The texts of the readings are a valuable resource in planning liturgical music. Most good hymnals offer a "Scripture" index with which one can easily match hymns to the readings for the day. Further, the assigned Scripture is an ideal place to begin a spiritual delving into the celebration, be it through meditation or study. Often, phrases or wording will spark a connection to an anthem, hymn, or organ selection whose inclusion in the order of worship will help to amplify and reinforce the readings and homily.

The Lectionary citations for every Sunday are available in the CNP Liturgical Planning Pages.
