Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Various tools are extremely useful to the musician responsible for planning liturgical music. During the summer Sundays in Ordinary Time we will explore these tools. The more of these you own or have access to, the easier and more complete will be your planning.

-- New American Bible --

The translation of Scripture found in the New American Bible (NAB) is that which is most commonly used in the United States. Having a hard copy of the full Bible or online version at New American Bible is useful for many reasons. Often, examining the context of the selected passage from the Lectionary (the text before and after what we hear at Mass) can clarify the fuller meaning. Brief passages are often selected for their pertinence to the celebration at hand, and brevity may necessitate reducing the amount of explanatory material before the passage.

The New American Bible, too, is noted for the quality of its introductions and footnotes. These can help educate us in matter scriptural. For example, in its introduction to The Book of Leviticus the NAB says:

The name "Leviticus" was bestowed on the third book of the Pentateuch by the ancient Greek translators because a good part of this book consists of sacrificial and other ritual laws prescribed for the priests of the tribe of Levi.

Further, in The Book of Revelation we hear of "One like the Son of Man, wearing an ankle length robe ... and a sharp, two-edged sword came out of his mouth." The footnote reads:

a sharp, two-edged sword: the word of God (Eph 6:17; Heb 4:12), which will destroy unrepentant sinners.

Having this tool at hand can do nothing but facilitate both our study of Scripture and our appreciation of the selections made by the Church for our worship.
