Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Catholic church music programs in the United States have strayed far from the ideal that is outlined for the Entrance Song in the rubrics of the Roman Missal. Paragraph 48 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal reads: "This chant is sung alternately by the choir and the people or similarly by the cantor and the people, or entirely by the people, or by the choir alone. [… the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum … or the Gradual Simplex may be used …]." While most parishes opt for a standard hymn at the entrance, the rubrical preference for a psalm with antiphon may still be accommodated today. Ideally, we should be singing chant Propers from the official books. If this is not possible, however, there are many published responsorial psalm settings and it should be easy to find a version that matches the entrance psalm specified for each Sunday.

Here is today's specific entrance psalm, and some information about it:

Psalm 119

The regular structure of this psalm is apparent in its twenty-two stanzas of eight verses each. The psalm is an acrostic, with each stanza headed by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and each verse in the stanza beginning with that letter. It might be titled, "The Word of God," as every one of the psalm's 176 verses mentions the Word of God, using terms like way, law, decrees, precepts, statutes, commands, ordinances, words. As this psalm is used for three entrance songs during Fall Ordinary Time, here we will examine the last group of eight stanzas only.

  • Stanza 15: Safety is there for those who fear God's ordinances.
  • Stanza 16: God cares for the welfare of his servants.
  • Stanza 17: The wonder of the law of the Lord brings light.
  • Stanza 18: God's commands are just and right.
  • Stanza 19: The Lord hears the cries of affliction.
  • Stanza 20: Redemption comes through the precepts of God.
  • Stanza 21: Rejoicing comes to those who keep the decrees of the Lord.
  • Stanza 22: Those who keep God's precepts live to praise him.
