Liturgical Hints & Ideas

This Solemnity is intimately linked to several recent liturgical celebrations. In the Passion accounts proclaimed on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, we see the Savior's heart pierced with a lance — immediately flows out blood and water, affirming our salvation in the actual death of Christ. Here are the symbols of the greatest Sacrament: Eucharist and Baptism, which are liturgically linked to Trinity Sunday (and the mandate to baptize all in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and to Corpus Christi (which celebrates the Holy Eucharist itself). Divine Mercy Sunday occurs between Holy Week and these latter two celebrations, and helps us to recall God's Holy Will, which is "Love and Mercy itself.". Thus the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus unifies all these themes as we are immersed in the Love of Christ and his Mercy made manifest to all mankind.
