The melody by Jan Kunc, "Christus vincit," found in the Saint Gregory Hymnal, has been used as the audio masthead for Vatican Radio for decades.
Kevin Frecker uses this melody quite adeptly in his Fantasia, starting in three-part polyphonic texture.
The melody then sounds in the pedal, with eighth-note motion in the right hand and full chords in the left.
A middle section proceeds through various keys (major and minor), with expert polyphonic writing surrounding the melody.
The conclusion sets the theme in broad, full, half-note chords, before a fanfare section closes the work.
While not overly difficult, this Fantasia sounds quite impressive, and would make a suitable festive prelude for Christ the King.
