Stephen DeCesare has adapted the text of Psalm 23 to the music of Giacomo Puccini, Sale ascende l'uman cantico.
The anthem is best sung by three equal voice parts (either women or men), but it is possible for an SAB choir to sing it, with the men on the second or third part.
The music is sung twice, each time with a different text coming from an original paraphrase of Psalm 23.
This would make a lovely Offertory or Communion motet on Good Shepherd Sunday — it's also quite useful at a funeral.
Stephen DeCesare presently serves as Director of Liturgy and Music at Holy Cross Church in Providence RI.
His degrees are in musical theater performance and opera from Rhode Island College, but one of his main loves is composing, which he's been pursuing since 1989.
Among his major works are six operas, including The Fourth Wise Man (premiered 1997), Our Lady of Fatima (premiered 1999) and Alpha and Omega (permiered 2001).
Excerpts of the opera Our Lady of Fatima appeared in the History Channel Documetary Fatima (Spring 2001), and his music is played by various radio stations across the country.
