Liturgical Hints & Ideas

Catholic church music programs in the United States have strayed far from the ideal that is outlined for the Entrance Song in the rubrics of the Roman Missal. Paragraph 48 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal reads: "This chant is sung alternately by the choir and the people or similarly by the cantor and the people, or entirely by the people, or by the choir alone. [… the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum … or the Gradual Simplex may be used …]." While most parishes opt for a standard hymn at the entrance, the rubrical preference for a psalm with antiphon may still be accommodated today. Ideally, we should be singing chant Propers from the official books. If this is not possible, however, there are many published responsorial psalm settings and it should be easy to find a version that matches the entrance psalm specified for each Sunday.

Here is today's specific entrance psalm, and some information about it:

Psalm 130

One of the Psalms of Ascent (Pss. 120-134), this theme is apparent from the depths of verse 1 to the heights of salvation in verse 8. Psalm 130 is also identified as one of the Penitential Psalms. The pilgrim cries to God from the depths, seeking redemption and relief from suffering. The answer: "With the Lord is kindness and plenteous redemption; and he will redeem Israel from all their iniquities."
